McData Touts Interoperable Storage
By L. Scott Tillett
McData Corp., a maker of switches for storage area networks, today announced that its products would interoperate with other storage switches, such as those made by Brocade.

McData officials estimate that their company holds about 40 percent of the storage switch market, with Brocade holding more than half of the market. But switches from different vendors do not necessarily operate with one another, meaning that users -- for the sake of interoperability -- often must buy all of their switches from the same vendor, instead of buying the cheapest or the most appropriate product for a storage project.

McData calls the new interoperability features being built into their products "E-Port."

"Customers today are hitting the wall in scaling their SANs [storage area networks] beyond simple SAN islands," said Jeff Vogel, vice president of solutions and systems integration services at McData. "With E-Port interoperability, customers can now deploy director-class products to build heterogeneous SAN solutions. ... This solution gives flexibility to the customer, allowing for legacy upgrades to complete SAN solutions."

E-Port products should begin shipping this month, a McData official said.
