ECONOMY TALK: The weekly ABC News/Money Magazine consumer sentiment index fell to 1 in the latest week, down from 2 the previous week and the lowest reading since May 1997. Most of the decline came in consumers' sentiment about their current finances, which has been declining lately after holding up well during the initial decline in the overall sentiment index (see latest report). At the beginning of the year, the ABC index stood at 23. While the rate of decline is in line with that seen in previous recessions, the overall level is not. In July, 1990, the index stood at -23. The University of Michigan releases its preliminary report of May consumer confidence on Friday. The index is seen dipping to 88.0 from April's final reading of 88.4.
