10:30 ET Dow +92, Nasdaq +17, S&P +9.17: [BRIEFING.COM] Since the opening bell, the Nasdaq has been the leading percentage gainer among the major indices, but in the past half hour its level of outperformance has been diminished... The reason being is that there has been some selling activity in the chip sector after the bullish call from Morgan Stanley on the chip equipment group was challenged by Goldman Sachs and CS First Boston... Both firms issued statements which, in a nutshell, suggested there is still downside risk for the group... Tech retreat has weighed a bit on the broader market, but continued strength in the retail sector has been an influential source of support... NYSE Adv/Dec 1689/865... Nasdaq Adv/Dec 1912/1093.
