If market makers don't want any buyers could it be because they are accumulating inventory?

If they knew Amati's stock price was going to come down wouldn't they want the price to move anyway because they make money between the bid and the ask?

If they're accumulating inventory wouldn't be wiser to accumulate now and wait until the before-earnings rally to get a wider spread and therefore better margins on their investments?
