I think purchasing those in-the-money calls suggest that the guy thinks (at least) that we will remain in-the-money in which case on expiration they will be exercised. He doesn't have to worry about them disappearing unless they are out-of-the-money calls as you know. If he gets the pop you suggest and that I think we could see, so much the better. He recieves the extra boost. Seems like a fairly safe play to me as options trades go which I suppose is a ridiculous thing to say to begin with! :o)
