If I told you that I found my "missing sock", would you take that to mean that I had no other socks prior to that time? Of course not.

Likewise, the "missing evidence for speciation" in the aritcle you reference is called a "ring species". It was "missing" in the time of Darwin, but there are several modern examples of this phenomenon. Three of these examples are given here
