<As for people believing that MSFT is all the things I mentioned, yes, there are lots of them. Just ask Reginald. >

What you are overlooking is the utilitarian effect NT has. I just moved my site from Solaris 2.5 on an Ultra Sparc to an NT box(es). Why? Because the plethora of programs and ease of use (combined with the much lower price) made it the practical thing to do. The vast majority of the money is in the Ford Taurus/Honda Accord market, and not the Lamborghini market. Remember that. Notice that Ford has purchased Jaguar, since they sold enough Tauruses to dominate the middle market, now they are moving up the food chain. The same can be said for Chrysler mini vans and their purchase of Lamborghini. Bill Gates is purportedely a devout student of business history and it appears he is simply pursuing the path of historically proven success. Milk the middle market margins for what they are worth, drop prices once you achive critical mass to lock out the competition, then move up the food chain in order to do the same on a higher level. MSFT is putting thier money in the middle market (slaying NOVL) and slowly (quickly?) working thier way up. Sun, Digital,HP and IBM are all smart enough to see this (especially due to the newfound power of the Pentium and soon the Merced), and have conformed/been assimilated (the Borg?), but Sun wants to fight the game on its own. Notice how they are transforming thier entire business model. This is not due solely to the Internet. Is it a coincidence? Hardly! Staggering their traditionally one size fits all OS is a purely defensive move. Why? Is it due to the "inferior" MSFT OS and thier commercials? Hardly, MSFT is achiveing momentum (and soon critical mass) in both popularity and functionality. Notice how quickly and efficiently security and scalling concerns are discovered and addressed. Isn't this unprecedented? I don't have to tell you how fast Wall Street is buying NT boxes.
