Markman was not a founder, or even close. He arrived in 1996 in the sixth year of the company's operation and a year after the IPO. I know of two CEOs that preceded him, and there may have been three.

GMGC's founders were out of Apple and included Bill Atkinson, Andy Hertzfeld, and Rich Porat. The first two, and perhaps Porat as well, were instrumental in creating the original Macintosh.

For an excellent article on the very early days at GMGC see wired.com .

Markman was brought in from Novell as "professional management." His resume is much more distinguished than that of anyone on the current management team.
