I WILL respond to this one because you have reinvented history. Eyewtiness News(where I worked at the time-1970- as a copy boy)came about after Al Primo, then news director noted that the ratings improved one evening after Messrs Roger Grimsby and John Schubeck along with Tex Antoine and Allan Jefferies had a "good time" on the air. Viewers LOVED it! Most had had a cocktail or TWO before the show. Long story short, THAT is when "happy talk" news was born and Tom Snyder was working at KNBC in LA at the time. Schubeck went to LA when Snyder came here several years later. Bill Beutel then joined Roger. And NO ONE ever laughed at blood and guts tragedies, by the way. The real concept was that anchors chatted with reporters and others and eliminated some of the stilted presentation and hard camera cutting from one to the other. They opened the shots and took two and three shots to capture the bi-play and make it appear like a happy family.. And as you will note, 30 years later, it still flies because it is what viewers want and the ratings prove it. td
