Saturn, re: Intel "other"

re: "Until a quarter ago communication was close to break-even."

Last years results (operating profit) for other:
4Q00 - Rev 1.841B - Loss - 657M
3Q00 - Rev 1.693B - Loss - 600M
2Q00 - Rev 1.541B - Loss - 676M
1Q00 - Rev 1.412B - Loss - 458M
And 1Q01
Rev - 1.544B - Loss - 1.041B

I don't see a lot of reason for optimism in the sequence.

re: "The big losses are probably due to Internet Services. Intel set up the Internet Service Centers, a la Exodus, just as the Dot Coms imploded and the demand for web hosting vaporized."

Hopefully Intel couldn't manage to lose $3.432 Billion on Internet services over the last five quarters.

re: "This is probably the worst time for Communications and Internet services. Even before the free fall of the last three months, the entire communication sector has been a confused mess. The combination of too many fast changing technologies, the high cost of implementing new infrastructure, and the constraints of existing infrastructure does not allow a clear cut strategy. There are so many attractive niches that hundreds of new communication companies have been funded."

All good arguments for a company not to invest in a sector.

re: "The bottom line is that this is way too early to pass judgement on the attempt to diversify into communications."

Maybe you are right. I remember thinking it was too early to pass judgement on JM Armstrong when he invested in cable companies a couple of years ago (albeit with debt not cash).

The company has spent over $10B on communications companies, and the only thing shareholders have to show for it is the disappearance of $3.4B of IAG profits, and a stock price that doesn't reflect the huge value of the core business.

Maybe I am getting concerned too early. Maybe when I posted the same concerns two quarters ago I was way too early. I don't know, and I'm wondering how low the stock price will go before I make up my mind.
