AMD has been working with Motorola to develop an SOI process technology that was originally based upon IBM's SOI technology. It may be that AMD was not certain until recently that they did not have all the licenses from IBM needed to use the SOI process technology being co-developed with Motorola. The use of IBM's engineering resources would seem to indicate that AMD will indeed be using IBM's foundry services. However it could simply be that, as part of the agreement, AMD has to use wafers implanted by IBM, and the involvement of IBM's engineers is to adapt the Motorola SOI process to IBM's wafers.
