Mexican Mobile Carriers Unite Against Miditel

Infolatina via NewsEdge Corporation : MEXICO CITY, May 10, 2001 (Reforma/Infolatina via COMTEX) -- A group of Mexican mobile telephone carriers has sent a letter to Communications and Transport Minister Pedro Cerisola demanding that the operating license of mobile operator Miditel be cancelled and that all of the company's rights to transmission frequencies be revoked, according to a report in Mexico City daily Reforma. The companies reportedly warned that Miditel poses a risk to the mobile communications sector in Mexico, Reforma business columnist Dario Celis Estrada reported. Miditel recently won a court case against regulator Cofetel, which had sought to cancel sale of transmission frequencies licenses to Miditel for failure to pay in accordance with an agreed schedule. The court found that Miditel could still acquire the licenses if it paid Cofetel promptly. Other mobile carriers, who lost to Miditel in an original auction for the licenses, object to the payment leeway the court ruling effectively has provided the company.
