Why would you expect no grief if you were blameworthy? I am baffled by your account. Either it is excused ("understandable"), or blameworthy (and you should expect to get grief).
It is an elementary principle of morality that one fulfill an obligation, once undertaken, or, more particularly, that one make all reasonable attempts to fulfill a promise. Breaking a promise, without excuse, is a moral infraction.
If you restrict the term "moral" to heinous offenses, I understand your resistance. Having, there is no warrant in traditional moral language for such a restriction. Telling the truth, fulfilling promises, repaying debts, and so forth are elementary rules of moral conduct........ |
