Fyo,"had the fan fail on my 700MHz Athlon classic" The difference between the Athlon and the Pentiums is that the Pentiums will internally shut down and the Athlon’s will not and it only takes seconds for the Athlon to fry. I would venture to say that many computer buyers don’t know that the computer even has a fan or have any concept at all about cooling and will continue to operate the system when temperatures get too high. How much of a problem this is I don’t know but we do know from a host of reports that the Athlon’s are susceptible to frying.
