2nd Fowler,

re: "I can't see Intel shareholders losing billions in the attempt to kill AMD."

Ha Ha. Intel shareholders don't seem to mind losing $Billions in the communications business in an attempt to kill Intel!

Seriously. Intel controls the pricing. Intel controls the marketing expenditures. AMD takes design wins under the Intel price at whatever gross margins are available.

You are right that from a legal point of view Intel wants AMD to survive. But Intel can tighten the screws on pricing anytime it wants. And the shareholders will tolerate it.

The same is true in any other high capex industry where there is a player with dominant market share.

AMD takes a few points of market share and look at Intel's response. Increased capex, increased marketing, lower prices, and they won't even break a sweat. By the end of the Christmas season, Intel will have gained back those market share points.

It's just the way it is in business. The golden rule: whoever has the gold makes the rules.
