Tom,

...$62 mil, but that was too much for an unproven prospect.

It seems the signing bonus of 3 million is pretty small when compared to other first rounder draft choices but the guarantee of 15.3 million over three years seems a bad precedence. Up to now in the NFL the signing bonus was the only thing guaranteed. The smallish signing bonus in this instance offsets the guarantee somewhat but it's still establishes a bad precedence. Next year the signing bonus will be higher and the guaranteed money will be greater. Pretty soon it will be like the NBA, with guaranteed contracts impeding a teams ability to compete.

I think the NFL has the best system with regard to controlling player's salaries of all the Pro leagues, their biggest flaw is rookie contracts. It's putting a lot good veterans on the street and causing the premature end of the careers of some great players.
