The underlying concept is true broadband to the home...if you have seen the term "Fiber to the Home" or FTTH, that is what they are talking about. It would be a single connection for all of your communications needs. This would include broadcast (what you get via cable or satellite now), data, telephony. The streaming video would be delivered to the television, not to the computer (not that it couldn't be). >>
Without knowing the true cost, perhaps you are making the faulty assumption. Of course just about anything is possible, if you throw enough money at it. Heck a rich guy just bought a trip to space!!
In the early 1990s I worked on some test sites to test home automation. The true costs, including ongoing mantenence and support, would have been staggering.
So again, there's a lot of hype that goes on.
