Trinidad injury claim denied by Tito Sr

May 11, 2001 – Reports from Puerto Rico suggesting that Felix “Tito” Trinidad had injured his knee in sparring, and may withdraw from his WBA title challenge against William Joppy in New York tomorrow, have been denied by the pound-for-pounder’s father and trainer Felix Trinidad Sr.

"He (Tito) is not hurt,” said Trinidad Sr. “If he were hurt, the injury would be tended to, like it would in the case of any athlete. This is just part of the sport. But this is not the case here. If this were the case, we would not have any reservations in postponing the fight."

The injury and withdrawal of Trinidad, 39-0 (32), from Saturday’s clash with Joppy at Madison Square Garden would have had a disastrous domino effect on Don King’s middleweight tournament.

A cancellation would potentially push back the scheduled September 15 finale between the Trinidad-Joppy winner and WBC and IBF champion Bernard Hopkins, also at the Garden.

Needless to say, Trinidad Sr has moved quickly to dispel claims emanating from Telemundo reporter Eliot Castro in Puerto Rico.

Castro stated that Tito had suffered the injury in his final sparring sessions before Saturday’s showdown, but - thankfully for fight fans - this appears not to be the case.
