Fashion Week Has First Fatality

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A performing rat became a fashion victim for real when it was killed by a falling
curtain rod while escorting models at this week's annual Australian designer show.

Hip youth designers Tsubi had drafted in 200 of the rodents, which were draped over the shoulders of
models or allowed to run free in what has been described as a ``ratwalk riot'' at Australian Fashion
Week.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) said it was saddened by the rat's
death on Thursday but did not plan to take action against the designers or show organizers.

``It was unforeseen, unfortunate and there is no investigation,'' RSPCA spokeswoman Jilea Carney
told Reuters on Friday, adding Fashion Week organizers had sought the society's permission to use the
rodents.

Tsubi is the label of four young men from the Sydney beachside suburb of Manly who have been
labeled ``surf-punk dudes'' by the media. Their provocative show also featured panhandlers and bag
ladies trailing empty beer cans.

Fashion Week's animal theme was set on Monday when blonde Australian supermodel Kristy Hinze
opened the show in a $500,000 million diamond-studded bikini with a diamond python coiled around
her shoulders and neck.
