Prior to the Fall of '95, the US didnt have an approved drug to treat Osteoporosis.Therefore why diagnose if you cannot treat. When Merck's Fosamax gained approval all companies involved in diagnostics such as Hologic, Lunar, Ostex etc skyrocketed. Lilly's new drug has completed the Phase 3 clinicals and FDA approval by year-end. This drug has been touted as being far superior to Fosamax. Some doctors have been reluctant to prescribe Fosamax due to its adverse side effects, although it has been very successful for Merck.
