Dear Robert:

Point 1:

All x86 CPUs with x87 FPUs can handle 64 bit integers. They are handled by the FPU, because it already handles 64 bit mantissas.

Point 2:

2^32 bits are already handled by all >=386 CPUs as 2^32 bits is only 512MB. I think you mean >4GB and virtual memory is up to 16TB. Also, under Linux, large files are already supported >4GB for x86 CPUs (upto 2G 1KB blocks = 2TB).
