HK PCCW Li Calls For More Japan Telecom Mkt Deregulation

May 8, 2001
Dow Jones Newswires

HONG KONG -- Richard Li, chairman of Hong Kong's Pacific Century Cyberworks Ltd. (PCW) called Tuesday for further deregulation of Japan's telecommunications market.

Speaking at the Fortune Global Forum in Hong Kong, Li said it is "inexplicable" that at the same time as the World Trade Organization treats Japan as a developed country, it's allowed to keep its telecoms market closed. He referred specifically to local access charges, which he said are "by far the highest in the world."

"I believe that if the Japanese regulatory authorities would start to deregulate and play according to international rules it would not only benefit companies outside of Japan, but much more importantly, (local) budding start ups and start up incubators," said Li.

He said Japan has terrabits of fibers already connected with the necessary licenses, but because of high access charges they're not being used.
