Emerson was a charming, intelligent man. I visited his house in Concord, and found it a cozy haven for a family. There was a doll's house that Thoreau had made for the children, wonderfully detailed and carefully wrought.

Interestingly, although it is true that some of the inspiration for the Transcendentalists was Eastern, the impact was varied. Schopenhauer was inspired by Max Mueller's translations of Buddhist texts, and developed a pessimistic philosophy, more in accord, I believe, with its origins. Life is suffering; the world is illusory; the goal is to achieve tranquillity of the passions and eventual release from the self and identification with the Life- force.

Anyway, I disagree with the Transcendentalists, and find them shallow. But I would guess they were good company.....
