As a birdwalk - simple thoughts on digital imaging and computer to plate.
Driving home after visiting the print shop, the following occured to me. In the toolmaking business there is a machine that has been around forever called a Bridgeport mill. Tool and die men learned their trade on these simple machines. The 'bam' on day the computer age was here, numerical control, CAM, etc. Bridgeport did not address this, figuring that everyone would want 'simple' machines. Along came retro-fit kits from other sources, making the old Bridgeports numerical readout (a half step). Caught on like wild fire, virtually every Bridgeport in use now has a numerical readout.
Whats this to do with printing?
After seeing the automation and 'smarts' of the QM-46, a simple imprint press, I believe Heidelberg has recieved the 'wake up' call and is addressing the change in the equipment market. They are addressing the talent factor, speed factor, and reliability factor. Also, believe Presstek is in the right place at the right time. They are being given a market. Also, the digital imaging technology is here and here to stay (even tho printers used simple presses in the past), you'll need to use the technology to stay in business.
As for plateless, to big of a step for imediate implementation, will have to wait and see what develops. (no pun intended).
Have a good holiday everyone. Later, TOM |
