From Goldman Sachs Wireless Conference:

US Wireless Post our conference last week, this is from our colleagues on the global desk. With four different 2G standards in the US, there has been the danger for one of the largest wireless markets to recreate this confusion all over again in the 3G evolution. However, it now seems that the US 3G market could in theory be dominated by WCDMA with only a minority of operators on CDMA2000. At our conference, Verizon Communications said for the first time publicly that it would consider going to WCDMA. As Verizon is the number #1 operator in the US, this would mean that the top 3 US carriers (in order Verizon, Cingular, AT&T Wireless) could all be on WCDMA, which would make it the dominant technology in the US. More importantly, it would also reassure Vodafone shareholders that its US associate would be using the same standard as Vodafone. Many US carriers, with exception of Sprint PCS, have said before that given the opportunity, they would go to WCDMA due to the scale advantages of going to a global standard--validating benefits of a global standard and the long proclaimed DoCoMo argument. We think this sentiment in the US reflects lessons learned from the very messy 2G deployments in the US. Interestingly, Verizon Wireless is not the only CDMA operator to suggest a WCDMA rollout; both SK Telecom and KT Freetel in Korea have opted for the WCDMA.
