Talks revive PNG pipe plans
The Daily Telegraph, May 14
BY JOHN MCCARTHY

Exxon revived the plan to link Papua New Guinea with Queensland with a natural gas pipeline in the second week of May 2001. The new action by the PNG consortium came as a proposal was floated by the Australian Pipeline Trust to start work on a national gas grid to link existing pipelines in northern and eastern Australia. Darwin would be linked to Mt Isa, Gladstone and Townsville as well as markets in the south. The link between Gladstone and Townsville remains unresolved. The Queensland Government is expected to announce the successful tenderer for the gas-fired Townsville power station in June 2001.
