LETTER
Jovin investigation pursued tenaciously

Letter to the Editor May 02, 2001

So murder suspect James Van de Velde thinks the New Haven police investigation into Suzanne Jovin’s brutal murder is a “joke” and that the investigating detectives were “amateurish.”

I most strongly disagree!

I am Detective Anthony DiLullo’s widow. I can say with confidence that neither he nor fellow investigator Tom Trocchio considered the tragedy a joke, and their tenacity reflected that. With 30 years as a police officer, my husband applied every skill he possessed to identifying Jovin’s killer. He was devoted to solving that crime until the day he died.

Leave it to someone in the pool of suspects to try to sully two fine detectives’ reputations, one of whom is deceased.

In my opinion, the headline “The Killer Is Still Out There” over James Van de Velde’s photo said it all. But how sad that the New Haven Register gave him three pages to weave his one sided tale.

Dear Mrs. Dilullo: I think we can all appreciate your difficulty in reading the article you referenced. Never the less I would have to ask you directly "where's the evidence". With all due respect, that's the point that so many people are trying to make. The last time I checked this was still America and simply putting a headline over a photo and attaching an empty insinuation is just not enough. This case will eventually be solved and I am sorry to say that more than likely it won't be by the New Haven Police.

Mrs. Dilullo, I am sorry for the loss of your husband. I'm sure he was a fine and dedicated officer. Please know that the many claims of a misdirected murder investigation are not intended to be personal attacks at your husband's reputation. They are simply the expression of fact concerning this investigation which continues to this day with a new investigative team which clings to the same misguided premise that James Van de Velde must have committed this murder. This is absolutely preposterous and the public has the need and right to know. The fact remains that the NHPD has named an innocent man as the only named suspect in this horrific crime. THEY HAVE THE WRONG MAN!!! Surely you understand the need to stand up in defense of the innocent. While this may appear as a "one sided tale", the truth has only one side and the truth is that James Van de Velde is innocent of any crime.
