Does anyone think that FSO will be more than a niche market.http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/010514/2457.html

The Market for Free - Space Optics About Ready to Take Off, According to Attendees at Recent IGI Photonics Briefing
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 2001--Information Gatekeepers' Free-Space Optics (FSO) conference, held in Boston on May 9, explored the multiple opportunities available to FSO equipment manufacturers and service providers. Presentations from IGIC, LightPointe, Epoch Partners, e-xpedient/CAVU, Optical Access, fSONA, and the FSO Alliance provided an in-depth look at FSO technology, its applications, and its market potential.

According to the speakers, FSO is no longer a niche solution. It is a mainstream, cost-effective alternative to fiber that can achieve speeds up to 2.5 Gbps and beyond. It can be used for metro ring connections, Last Mile access, LAN to LAN interconnection, temporary connectivity during special events, 3G backhaul, and as backup to existing wireline services. In an overview of the optical networks markets, Dr.Paul Polishuk of IGI Consulting described FSO as complementary to fixed fiber.

New start-ups appeared with clearly new ideas for FSO systems and wavelengths. IGI Consulting believes that FSO will be one of the pivotal tools service providers will use to unlock the pent-up demand that exists for high-speed connectivity in the business and residential markets. We forecast that FSO worldwide equipment revenues will reach almost $4 billion by 2006, up from approximately $90 million in 2000.

FSO is just one of the topics IGIC has explored in its ongoing Photonics Briefings Series. Upcoming topics include Optical Interconnection, Photonics Automation, Unrepeatered Submarine Fiber Optic Systems, Optical Networking Interoperability, Photonic Crystals, and a special two-day event on Metro Markets.

Conference proceedings are available for all of our events as well as audiotapes of the FSO conference.
