>>Are electric companies private companies? If so, how can they get land via the condemnation process? Just another one of those "have your cake and eat it, too" things that happen whenever government and private industry get in bed together.<<

I am in no way defending the utilities but they aren't alone in this having the cake and eating it too.

We recently had a case here in Idaho that really chapped my hide and made me spit fire. -g- There are large tracks of GOVERNMENT land that we set aside for various uses including being used as a training range for our aircraft. The land wasn't needed for a few years so the government gave "grazing rights" to some ranchers here so they could let their cattle loose on a year to year basis. We decided we needed the land to fly our new training profiles due to changes in the world threat and wanted the land back. The ranchers sued saying it was their right to have cattle on that land even though their leases had run out. The Air Force not wanting bad publicity gave these guys multiple millions of dollars to shut them up and get the land that was ours to begin with.

Imagine me staying the night over at your house but then when you want me gone, I litigate and you have to pay me more than the house is worth to leave. Like a squater from hell!

I have the same problem with loggers that think federal land is only here for them to clear cut. That is the big controversy going on out here now. 500 companies looking for employees out here and all they claim to know how to do is operate a chain saw. My kids don't need to ever see a tree or wildlife and the public apparently doesn't have the right to hunt, fish or camp. Sorry but this domain thing is a sore point with me.

Good Luck,

Lee
