Bennet, I think I figured out the answer to my own question, although I still hope that Guido puts in his 2 cents. Volume is up today. If someone big wanted to buy large # of shares, then buying options first gives them a guaranteed price:

1. Buy options
2. Buy large # of shares driving up short-term price
3. Sell options after stock price goes up; or if price goes down you can buy the later shares at a lower price.
