I disagree. For a mass market yes, however for relatively wealthy people no. Wait for the next ice storm. That one a couple of years ago in Quebec left people without power for weeks. Trees get blown down across power lines and power can be out for days. In fact it would be a status symbol to have your own power unit in basement. Plus you have to include the total energy cost for a house. An SOFC system generates heat which can be used to heat hot water. An SOFC system will approach an 80% efficiency rate.
Diesel generators are noisy and require substantial relative maintenance.
