Denis, the odd thing is that the body is wrapped in so many bandages and bandaids that atrophy has set in underneath, and could not stand erect properly without the dressings. The gauze and the splints, in other words, are holding up the body.

Service providers and enterprise technology folks have become so accustomed to the fixes that the cure looks more like the disease than the disease does. DHCP and multiple layers of network address translation (NAT) are ubiquitous, and other applications are now dependent on their presence. Wow. Chiappa might not be right about the specific reasons he's stated, but it's going to be extremely difficult at this stage to change how things work. It would have been a snap five years ago... well, in relative terms anyway, when the 'Net was only 10 percent of what it is now. Five years from now, who knows how many pops and nodes it will have, and how many more fixes will be invented from which extrication may not be feasible without even greater pain.
