No argument there, Jim. Recently we've also been looking at the other major scaling problem that the 'Net must contend with, and that is the ability of its routers to manage the growing number of AS routes and routing tables. In short, there are now upwards of 105,000 AS routes, up from approximately 60,000 just a year and a half ago. This problem is said to be manageable for only another two or three years at the current run rate of table growth.

So, we have on the one hand a routing model whose border gateway protocol needs to be redesigned within two or three years. And on the other hand, we have an addressing problem that must be set straight (notice I didn't say "fixed") within the next 4 or 5. One has to stop and wonder how correcting one of these will wind up affecting the other. Hmm...

Hmm.. SONET/ATM/FrameRelay, collectively, almost begin to look elegant against this backdrop.
