BEIJING, May 15, 2001 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China Unicom, the second largest mobile telecommunications operator in China, announced
Tuesday that ten companies have won the bid for its code division multiple address (CDMA) system equipment.

The winners are Qingdao Lucent, Hangzhou Motorola, Guangdong Nortel, Nanjing Ericsson, Shanghai Bell, Zhongxing, Datang, Jinpeng, Orient Telecom,
and Huawei.

The whole bid process was conducted under the principles of fairness and transparency, said an official from China Unicom.

The construction of the first phase CDMA network will begin soon, linking 15.15 million users. The total sum for purchasing major equipment will be 12.1
billion yuan.

Zhongxin Telecom, a domestic telecom equipment manufacturer, won a contract to provide equipment for the CDMA system covering 1.1 million users in
ten provinces.

All the foreign-funded winners have shown promise at technological transferring and cooperation, said the official.
