The very nature of the political beast is one of corruption so I hate to see religion getting into politics. It'll only corrupt the religion because religion surely won't change politics. The two need to be separated. This is no argument for the separation of politics and religion. I hardly think anyone can "protect" religion by separating it from politics. Heck, all one has to do is add humans and religion is nearly corrupted in an instant.
