-- KGO Leading ABC's Migration to Tapeless System --
BEAVERTON, Ore., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE:TEK) today announced it has been awarded a multimillion dollar contract to replace KGO-TV's entire news system. KGO-TV, an ABC owned and operated station in San Francisco, is leading ABC's migration to tapeless systems. The Tektronix news system will allow over 70 journalists, producers and photographers the ability to access and edit news stories, increasing their creative capability and productivity. The system will be phased in over time, with the first shipment of Tektronix NewStar stations to be installed later this month. The entire project is being managed by Tektronix Video and Networking Division's Systems Management Group and will be fully operational in 1998.
The KGO news system, designed by Tektronix, includes 90 Tektronix NewStar(R) news automation stations, 12 Tektronix EditStar(TM) news editing stations, 6 Tektronix Lightworks(TM) V.I.P 4500 online editing systems, 10 Tektronix Profile(R) video servers, a Tektronix Grass Valley(TM) SMS7000 router and a Silicon Graphics(R) Origin2000(TM) server, all under Omnibus control. Incoming feeds will be recorded to Tektronix Profile video servers and transferred via Fibre Channel to the Silicon Graphics Origin2000 and StorageTek central storage library for near online storage. Material will be available to any of 12 Tektronix EditStar stations and 6 Tektronix Lightworks V.I.P 4500 online editing systems for news editing. Play to air will be from mirrored Profile video servers also fed from the Origin2000 and the StorageTek library. The Fibre Channel network provides high speed exchange of material in a compressed format. The entire system will be under the control of NewStar and Omnibus.
``We decided to go with Tektronix because we believe in their news strategy,'' said Jim Casabella, director of engineering for KGO-TV. ``They understand the challenge and are delivering the solutions we need for browsing, media management and MPEG-based news editing. Additionally, they can deliver functionality now, allowing us to transition our staff into the digital world over time, yet maintain and even increase productivity.''
KGO is the most aggressive station in the country in moving from tape to disk. They are a major news producer in the #5 market in the U.S. This solution stands to be the basis for dozens of similar solutions.
