Scared,

The DDR mobos only work for the AMD thunderbird machines. The DDR motherboards for P4 probably won't show up until August.

Only 10 months after the launch of DDR as main memory in PC systems. DDR is facing one of the slowest ramps in history, and as this mornings article pointed out, the lack of success is starting to taint it's image (along with reports of compatibility problems). I wonder what would happen if Intel suddenly said "we can't get it to work reliably and so won't be supporting it in Brookdale?" Since there appears to be no perceptible performance difference due to DDR (again, reported multiple times), why would Intel go through the hassles of qualifying DDR? Just bring out an SDRAM-only version of the chip and leave it at that for the low and mid-range systems.

But that, of course, would leave Via potentially as the prime entrant for DDR chipsets for the P4. Interestingly, the VIA DDR chip has been promised for over a year (or two?) for a variety of processors and still hasn't appeared. I have to wonder what the hold up has been? And if there's no performance difference with DDR, how many of the major vendors would jump on board when there's still the specter of the compatibility issues?

Just some thoughts. I have no idea how this is going to play out.

Dave
