Around Europe: May 15, 2001

Hewlett-Packard says it is close to becoming the number-two personal computer maker in Europe and announced it will cut prices on Pentium 4-based computers by between 13% and 30%. It also said severe price competition, set off by rival U.S. PC-maker Dell Computer and dubbed by many as a price war, would lead to rapid consolidation in which second-tier manufacturers would lose business to the top five. HP raised its European market share in the first quarter to 8.0% from 7.1% in the previous quarter, according to research group Gartner Dataquest. Dell rose to 9.0% from 7.6%, and Compaq Computer was virtually stagnant in the No. 1 position at 13.6% versus 13.5% previously. Fujitsu-Siemens was the big loser in the first quarter, with its market share falling to 7.8% from 8.7%.
