Good analogy re: the highway system highlighting the physical, cost and operating issues of building a duplicate. It not just a matter of screaming Free Markets and expecting competition to develop. As one of the marketeers admitted the best you get is a vertically integrated monopoly--with a license to fleece I might add.

I read that hapharard and abusive nature of creating those small duplicate systems early on was one of the reasons people began screaming for regulation...one of the worse examples being an eastern city where a tangle of wires was not contributing to reliable service, but quite the opposite. I'll look too.

Yes, we've been there, done that. Of course lessons of the past are often lost on the precient.
