I'm old enough to remember. I'm no Luddite, either. Coal is relatively abundant, relatively cheap, but it's hard on the environment. Some say the EPA goes too far, some say not far enough. Another one of those tradeoff thingies. That's the way public policy works, identify all the interests and strike a balance somewhere in the middle. Those on the opposite ends of the spectrum will never be pleased with the outcome. But the balance struck is usually subject to revision if the equation changes. If we get hard up enough maybe we'll decide that a dirtier environment is worth it, who knows?
