Free-Space Optics Named 'Hot' Technology
"In addition to LightPointe, San Diego is home to Air Fiber and Optical Access, making it the international center for the emerging FSO market." SAN DIEGO, May 16, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Free-Space Optics has been named one of the "10 Hottest Technologies" by Telecommunications Magazine, the national magazine covering service provider technologies and applications. FSO offers service providers and business customers ultra high-speed broadband access using optical transmissions through the air. "Compared with fiber-optic lines, FSO systems take much less time to deploy and cost much less [than traditional fiber installations]," noted the article, which appears in the May issue. In addition to providing a "last mile" solution, FSO can be used to extend carriers' metropolitan area networks, without digging up streets for fiber-optic cable. The Strategis Group predicts FSO will grow in to a $2 billion market in the next five years, the article said. "Telecommunications Magazine recognizes that the flexibility and reliability of FSO make it the ideal solution for delivering high-bandwidth data, voice and video," said Baksheesh Ghuman, vice president of marketing for LightPointe, a manufacturer and designer of optical transmission equipment using FSO. San Diego-based LightPointe was specifically cited for its installed customer base, including The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., which uses LightPointe's FSO equipment to create a high-bandwidth network among its various facilities. In addition to LightPointe, San Diego is home to Air Fiber and Optical Access, making it the international center for the emerging FSO market.
