RARE 'STINKY' MIAMI FLOWER BLOOMING A SECOND TIME: A towering flower famous for
its rotten-meat stench is close to blooming again, the first time one of the
rare plants has bloomed twice in the United States, its keepers say.
The 6-foot-6-inch flower, known affectionately at Fairchild Tropical Garden
as "GROUND ZERO" because of its unpleasant scent when in bloom, is expected to
spread its petals by Thursday.
While notable for its size, the Titan Arum achieves notoriety because of
the strong stench it releases. In its native Sumatra, the smell is described as
being that of a rotting elephant.
The smell attracts carrion beetles that pollinate the flower, along with thrill seekers like Nit-Wit and Roberta.
Thousands of onlookers gathered to see GROUND ZERO bloom in 1998. Its
seedling mate, CAPT, bloomed in 1999. The blooming can last up to four days.
Conservatory manager Winnie Van Scrotum will not let it go that long, however. He
plans to pollinate the flower himself in the first eight hours. Pollination causes the flower to close.
