UTStarcom signs $14M worth of China contracts
UTStarcom Inc., the Alameda provider of broadband access equipment, said it signed follow-on contracts totaling about $14 million in various cities in China's Zhejiang Province.

This closely follows $5 million worth of contracts to implement a new broadband metropolitan area network in five cities along the eastern coast of China in the Shandong province, which were announced earlier this month.

The UTStarcom technology provides telephone service to consumers within a specific city or community using small, mobile handsets with the signal traveling across low-cost, conventional, fixed telephone lines.

By using this equipment, providers can quickly build out their wireless access network and services and instantly deploy to meet specific operator and subscriber requirements. It also allows for easy network expansion as subscribers' voice and data demand grows.

The company is benefiting from China's commitment to infrastructure development, strong economic growth and pent-up consumer demand.
