QCOM remains life of the party
Investors enjoy recent success across the Web

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Amid the weeklong ruckus surrounding the briefcased wonder and the legions of investors who dissect his every move, one of the more bullish announcements in Qualcomm's recent history snuck, relatively unnoticed, across the wire.

But now that Fed buzz has settled down, Tuesday's word of a $1.46 billion kiss from China Unicom began to sink in with the Quillionares; hence some of those familiar topics crept back into the cyber-spotlight. See full story.

Asian espionage, patent-infringement, industry conspiracies, media ineptitude (yours truly excluded of course) ... Qualcomm's got it all.

Just ask the message board regulars.

"Not sure if it's a novel or a soap opera," posted Voop. "International/political intrigue, innuendo, cabals, in-fighting, FUDmeisters, villains, heroes, greed, power, willful deceit. Needs more sex, however."

Perhaps some compromising photos of CEO Dr. Irwin Jacobs chatting on a cell phone wearing nothing but a smile would do it?

(No JPEGs via e-mail, please).

But the cyber-fun wasn't confined to Silicon Investor's boards. The oft-quotable Morgman danced a virtual moonwalk on The Motley Fool, home of many a Qualcomm fanatic: "I would like to point out that most of us on this board knew this was coming about one year ago. It was one of those 'not if but when' things ... just like the roll out of 1X and the eventual replacement of GSM with CDMA. This is very satisfying however. Makes me wanna dance."

He then, of course, continued with his celebratory "pelvis pump" and "crotch grab," but that's a topic for a different "All Aboard" ... one that might be of interest to Voop.

At any rate, Morgman and his cronies weren't just spewing baseless "I told you so's" ... the devout Qualcomm faithful, for the most part, have never shown anything but the utmost confidence in their pet company and its CDMA technology -- dating back to the early days of Qualcomm's near invincibility.

Another bull, LeapsInvestor, also shared his take on CBS.MarketWatch.com: "China is China ... most likely making the move (well, maybe making the move) to enhance competition and making it possible for further gains with the rest of the world. Good business. Not to mention they may feel owning BETA might not be wise when VHS is on the market."

In the interest of full disclosure, I, too, hold a small sack of Qualcomm shares (QCOM: news, msgs, alerts) ... not so much as an investment but as a standing invitation to the 24-hour party constantly raging across the message boards.

To be honest, it's been an expensive shindig so far, having purchased the shares in the triple digit realm ... but, hey, Morgman, Leaps, Voop and the rest of the Quillionaires often help to soothe the pain of the sagging market.

Not to mention that my 50 percent bath in Qualcomm still outshines the return of most of my other tech investments.

In the words of Mentat, another Marketwatch local: "Good luck QCOM, may your licensing activities keep pace with investor interest in your stock."

Indeed.
