more on Mr Blair

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair continues to play his cards right. Blair recently called for a June election (11 months ahead of the constitutional deadline set for May 2002) to take advantage of the favorable manner in which the government has managed to largely protect the UK economy from global contagion and perhaps even more importantly, the foot-and-mouth scare. Not to be outdone, Blair's Labour Party reiterated today that while it still favors entry into Europe's single currency mechanism, it will only do so if the economics are right, and the British public agrees via a referendum. Such uncertainty also offers a great deal of protection, as the fact that the Blair does not plan to test the euro waters for another 2 years suggests that he may also be able to diffuse such an emotional issue ahead of the June election.
