First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSE Symbol "FM", LSE Symbol "FQM") is pleased to announce that Mr. Rupert Pennant-Rea has been appointed to the Company's Board of Directors effective May 16, 2001.

Rupert Pennant-Rea (53) has had a varied career as economist, journalist, central banker and businessman. He was born and brought up in Zimbabwe, and has degrees in economics from Trinity College, Dublin and the University of Manchester. He has been Editor of The Economist and Deputy Governor of the Bank of England.
He is now Chairman of The Stationery Office, which was formed in 1996 from the privatization of Her Majesty's Stationery Office. He is also Chairman of Plantation & General Investments plc, Security Printing & Systems Limited, and Key Asset Management (UK) Limited. He is a Non-Executive Director of British American Tobacco, Sherritt International (a Canadian multinational), and Gordon House Asset Management.
