I talked to a P4 designer at February, 2000 IDF about the double pumped ALUs. The first thing I asked him was: "How do you remove the heat from the hot spot?". His answer was something like: "yes this is a problem and we do have some work left to do there".

What's so special about an ALU design that would make it subject to localized heating as opposed to some other functional unit? Is it just extreme usage (duty cycle)? See if you can find out if they did have to use lower Vt devices to achieve the double speed. I'm curious.
