If you get the chance, purchase a EuroRail pass; from Italy - probably Rome, head north to Munchen (Munich) and then east to Prague, the capital of Czech Republic. I was all over Europe in 1995, and Prague was among my favorite stops. It's a part of "that" Europe which, held behind the Iron Curtain for so long, hasn't borne the full weight of Western/American influence, so it has a distinctly foreign feel. The people are friendly, the scenery and architecture are beautiful, and it is - or, perhaps, was - the most affordable place I'd been in Europe. Good for a 2-4 day stay. LPS5
