India, China plan telecom joint ventures
timesofindia.com

NEW DELHI: India and China have agreed to cooperate in
the telecommunications sector and set up joint ventures to
explore opportunities in other countries.

Both the countries decided to sign a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) for cooperation and joint ventures in
other countries during a meeting in Jakarta between
Communications Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and Chinese
Information Industry Minister Wu Jichuan, according to
communications ministry officials here.

Both the ministers exchanged information on their
respective telecom systems and agreed to jointly offer
solutions for providing universal access in both the countries.

Paswan is currently in Jakarta accompanied by a high-level
delegation to attend the 2nd Asia-Pacific
Telecommunication and Information Technology Forum
(Aspactel), which concluded on Tuesday.

Indonesia too has expressed keen interest in sending a
delegation led by the director general of Indonesian
telecommunication to study telecom facilities in India.

During a meeting with Paswan, Indonesian Communications
Minister Agum Gumelar expressed keen interest in India's
effort to achieve rural connectivity. He also requested India
to provide training facilities to Indonesian telecom
professionals in Indian institutions.

Paswan in turn offered Indonesia on trial basis the rugged
rural exchanges developed by Center for Development of
Telematics (C-DOT) that do not require air-conditioning
and are dust-proof.

Making a presentation of reforms in the telecommunications
sector at Aspactel, telecommunications secretary Shyamal
Ghosh identified the future agenda for enactment of the
Communication Convergence Bill, the Internet telephony
and rural telephony using the WiLL (wireless in local loop)
technology and the 3G mobile technology.
