Avici Systems Captures 6.5% of OC-192c-Capable Router Market
Increases Market Share in the Fastest Growing Router Market Segment

N. BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2001--Avici Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: AVCI - news), a leading provider of scalable core routing solutions for intelligent IP-over-optical networks, today announced that, according to industry analyst firm Dell'Oro Group, it has captured 6.5 percent of the OC-192c-capable Internet core router market and nearly doubled its share of the overall WAN router market to 2.1 percent. In Q1 2001, the OC-192c-capable router segment, one of the fastest growing in all of data networking grew by 62 percent over the fourth quarter of 2000.

``By increasing our share, Avici continues to demonstrate its growing momentum at the core of the Internet and the value of its scalable architecture,'' said Steve Kaufman, president and COO of Avici Systems. `` We are pleased with the market acceptance of our OC-192c and 2-port OC-48c products shipped earlier this year and continue to be focused on expanding our presence in one of the fastest growing segments in the data networking market. By increasing the segmentation in this space, Dell'Oro Group has provided better insight on the broad product transition to higher-speed backbones.''

Avici's TSR® scalable core router has solved one of a carrier's most fundamental problems -- finding a way to cost-effectively scale its network to respond to new traffic requirements or new service roll-outs without costly annual forklift upgrades. Scalability enables carriers to lower operational costs through network simplification in a non-disruptive fashion, protecting network investments while minimizing dependence on often-scarce IP talent and resources to reconfigure the network to support emerging new traffic or services. This enables carriers to focus valuable talent and capital on generating revenue with compelling and differentiated new service offerings.
